IBM

A targeted public opinion project to understand people's real world experiences of living in four UK cities.

ComRes conducted a bespoke quantitative survey of 2,010 adults living in four cities in the UK; London, Leeds, Glasgow and Brighton. Fieldwork was completed in four days.

The survey looked at what it was like to live in each of these cities. It explored both general perceptions, and real day to day experiences. The project fed into IBM's thought leadership programme, Smarter Cities. This looks to identify the challenges facing urban centres and to propose 21st century solutions. In particular Smarter Cities understands urban centres as complex networks of components, and shows how existing infrastructure can be supported with new technology and allowed to respond intelligently to emerging challenges.

Our work supported this programme in understanding some of the challenges faced in these four cities from a residents' point of view, and by providing media-friendly and robust data for a multi-dimensional public relations effort. An infographic was created by IBM with ComRes's support to illustrate the results, and this was included on the ComRes's website.

The poll received widespread coverage, while the infographic was named as one of the Guardian's web picks for the week.
